Elmer Bornsen, 97, of Larimore, ND, went home to see Jesus on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at the Northwood Deaconess Nursing Home. Elmer was born April 19, 1916 on a farm near Niagara, ND, to Fred and Katrina Bornsen. He was baptized and confirmed at the Elm Grove Lutheran Church near McCanna. He received his education in Morraine township. He farmed with his father and brother until he was drafted into the Army on March 11, 1941. He served 5 years with the 775th Tank Destroyer Battalion with 33 months on the front lines of WWII in Africa, Italy, France, Germany, and Austria. Upon his discharge in 1945 he returned to the Larimore area where he owned and operated a back hoe service, opened a paint and linoleum store and farmed as well. He married Doris Limke Stover in 1952. He was active in the Larimore volunteer fire department, the Ted Valerius Post 97 American Legion, Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, and the V.F.W. Post 1874.
Elmer is survived by his daughter, Karen (David) of Grand Forks, ND, son Jerry, of Omaha, NE, brother, Fred (Eva), of Larimore, ND, daughter-in-law Vonnie of Ft Pierce, Fl, 13 grandchildren: Nathan (Ruth) Bornsen, Shannon (Pete) Markovic, Shari Bornsen, Jerry Bornsen, Tom Bornsen, Tina Bornsen, Leslie (John)Rethemeier, Erica (Jared) Wiegandt, Alysia Hagert, Andrea Hagert, Eric Bornsen, Jeremy Bornsen, and Brittany Knoff and many great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Doris, parents, stepmother, brothers Clarence, Lawrence, and Herman, sisters Florence and Margaret, sons Tom and Bruce, and daughter-in-law Rita. Elmer was a kind, gentle man, who was loved by many. He always said that he lived a great life and was proud to serve his country.
Funeral service will be at 10 am Monday, Feb 3 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Larimore, ND.
Visitation will be held Sunday, Feb 2 from 2-4 pm at Bakke Funeral Home, Larimore, ND with a prayer service at 3 pm.
Burial will take place in Bellevue Cemetery, Larimore, ND.
