Doris “Duffy” Eastburn

March 16, 1928 ~ December 25, 2012

Doris “Duffy” Eastburn, age 84, of Sharon, ND, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2012 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. Formally from Grand Forks, then Larimore, Steele County, near Sharon. We’ve lost one fantastic lady, one whose youthful attitude, energy, and wonderful sense of humor always lightened up a room or conversation. Besides her stories or jokes, she would often break out into song imitating a sultry lounge singer or a young Shirley Temple to perfection. She was always a fun person to be around. She and her late husband George, traveled quite extensively, eventually settling down at the family farm in Steele County, where they raised Fjord Horses and an assortment of loving animals. Decades of Lion’s Club membership, “Duffy” held assorted presidential positions and she was to be the first female in North Dakota to hold the District Governor title. During that tenure she became known as the “hugging” District Governor, more personal, she’d say. One of her special interests was the Leader Dog training program for the visually impaired. If you knew her, you will remember how much she loved animals, and they her. Doris was president of the Sharon Senior Citizens, member of the Steele County Council on Aging, attended Larimore United Methodist Church, and was an active participant in many other community organizations. She would often attend NDSU football games, supporting the team from the college where she and George first met. Doris assumed the nickname “Duffy” while living near Larimore, after discovering so many other Doris’s. She was definitely an individual, one who will be sorely missed by many people. She is survived by three children, Tom, Hot Springs, SD, Ootsen “Nancy”, San Diego, CA, and Lori now living at the farm in Steele County and two grandchildren, Roger Rogalla, Denver, CO, and Lauren Zimmerman, Durango, CO.

Visitation will be Sunday 2-4, with a prayer service at 4 PM at the Bakke Funeral Home in Larimore.

Her funeral will be held Monday December 31st at 11 AM at the United Methodist Church in Larimore.

Burial will be in Westfield Cemetery, Sharon, ND.
