Audrey Grace Silcox, 89, of Larimore, ND quietly went home to be with the Lord she loved and served so faithfully on September 15, 2020. Audrey was born to Elmer and Blanche Stewart on May 30, 1931 in Jay Township, Martin County, Minnesota. The youngest of seven children, Audrey grew up as a farm girl in the Sherburn, Minnesota area. She loved riding horses, helping with chores and enjoying the outdoors. Even as a child, Audrey had a sweet, caring and nurturing nature. She graduated from Sherburn High School in May, 1948 and found herself working in a little corner drug store as a soda fountain waitress. It was there, that she met the love of her life, her future husband, Gordon. As he would often say, he knew she liked him because his malted milk shakes were always extra good. Audrey was a good balance for Gordon and she added a supportive gentleness and kindness to his life that the Lord would later use in their ministry together.
A few years after their marriage on October 1, 1950, Audrey, along with her husband Gordon, came to know the LORD Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour. That changed the entire direction of both of their lives. Everything in their life from that day forward, was in pursuit of God’s plan and will for them. She followed Gordon willingly. They sold their farm and followed God’s call into the ministry. This calling led them both on a 69 ½ year mission of serving the Lord together. How appropriate that Audrey’s death should follow so closely after Gordon’s, for she has always faithfully followed him.
Audrey was always a loving, compassionate support to her husband during their almost 70 years together. God blessed their home with four children, 3 girls and one boy. After the Lord and her husband, Audrey’s greatest joys were her children and subsequent grandchildren. She was a dedicated nurturer of all people. Everyone she met became her friend, and her gracious, loving kindness to them left lasting impressions on the lives of people everywhere. She only worked outside the home for a short period of time in her married life. Her greatest work was in the lives of her family and church family. There, she taught by example and through individual instruction, how to know and follow the Lord, and how to love your husband and nurture your children in the ways of the Lord. She was a true Proverbs 31 woman and an example of faithfulness as a wife, mother and Pastor’s wife. Each person she came in contact with, who opened their heart to her loving kindness and wisdom, was helped. They are the ones today, who honor her life and legacy. They openly express their own gratitude for having known such a gracious, caring, self-sacrificing woman. Her Christianity was seen in her caring touch on people’s lives, and heard in the godly wisdom she so readily shared. She has been a “Mother” to many.
Audrey is deeply loved by many, but none more than her family. She is survived by her daughters, Sheryl (Ken) Shaffer of Larimore, ND, Grace (Mike) Custer of East Grand Forks, MN, Diane (Mark) Becker of Hartville, Ohio. Audrey is also survived by her 16 beautiful grandchildren and 23 “perfect” great-grandchildren. Her family loved their “Great Mimi” and Great Grandma. She is also survived by one sister, Lucinda Peterson of Denver, Colorado and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by Gordon, her husband of almost 70 years who passed away in February 2020, a son, Jonathan Richard of Grand Forks, ND, her parents, Elmer and Blanche Stewart, and 5 siblings; Emmeline Steele, Doris Stewart, Calvin Stewart, Leonard Stewart and Victor Stewart.
“ Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory that no one can steal.”
