Doris Henry Rustan

Doris M. Henry Rustan, 83, of Larimore died Sunday, July 31, 2016 at the Northwood Deaconess Health Center.


The funeral service will be Thursday, August 4th at 11 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 302 Booth Avenue in Larimore with Rev. Jason Darty officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 3rd from 5 – 7 p.m. at Bakke Funeral Home, 701 Towner Avenue in Larimore. A prayer service will follow at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Officiating will be Rev. Jason Darty. Music selections will be provided by Ruth Ann Tuseth as the Organist and Kevin Nelson Soloist. A quartet consisting of Kevin Nelson, Bruce Melby, Robert Stover and Al Melby will sing, accompanied by Camilla Stover. Casketbearers are Les Canarr, Paul Harwig, Alan Olson, Kirke Henry, Scott Henry and Paul Hofer. Immediately following lunch at the church, a committal service and interment will be held at Bellevue Cemetery, Larimore.


Doris ILL was born March 27, 1933 in Grafton, N.D, to Carl and Sophia (Puppe) ILL. She grew up on the family farm, attended a one-room rural primary school, and graduated as class co-valedictorian from St. Thomas High School. She attended Aaker’s Business College in Grand Forks and completed a course in stenography. She worked for E.W. Brady accounting firm in Grand Forks and the housing office at the University of North Dakota.


On September 5, 1954 she married William (Bill) Henry at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of rural St. Thomas. They farmed in the Kempton area. Bill died on August 17, 1989. Doris was fortunate to marry again, this time to Lloyd Rustan on November 10, 1990 at the Northwood Deaconess Health Center Chapel. They spent their time between homes in Larimore and Mesa, AZ. Lloyd died October 20, 2003.


Doris was an active member of the church and community. She belonged to the Miriam Circle at Our Savior’s, taught Sunday School, quilted at church, was a member of the Larimore High School Band Mother’s Club, and an early member of the Kempton Homemakers club. In 1964, this group won third place in a state-wide competition to compile county histories. She worked at the Northwood Deaconess Health Center and volunteered at the Larimore Good Samaritan Center. She also enjoyed golfing, oil painting, decorating, crafting, gardening, ceramics, sewing, cooking, canning and traveling.


Surviving family members include two sons, Kirke (Judy) Henry, Kempton; Scott (Julie) Henry, Roseville, MN; three daughters, Annette (Leslie) Canarr, Larimore; Beth (Alan) Olson, Mendota Heights, MN; and Anita (Paul) Harwig, Longville, MN. Doris also has five grandchildren: Melissa Henry, Larimore; Jess Henry, Roseville, MN; Kate Henry, Duluth, MN; Josh Canarr, Excelsior, MN; Amie Canarr, Fargo; and two great-grand sons, Levi Henry and Rhalen Canarr. Surviving siblings include Marian (Raymond) Reinert, Millington, Michigan; Charles (Ann) ILL, St. Thomas; Carlton (Judy) ILL, Cavalier; Darlene (Dewey) Nielsen, Oxford, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Mary Ann Gangelhoff.
