Howard Julius Edwin Drewlo, age 88, of rural Arvilla, ND, passed away at home on February 25, 2022. He was born at home March 30, 1933 in Mekinock Township, to Julius and Barbara (Bauer) Drewlo.
As a child Howard enjoyed the farm life, riding his horse Sandy, and was a member of the local 4-H club, showing a winning steer. Howard attended country schools up to his freshmen year, then joined his Dad farming full time. After retiring from farming he worked for Aerial Contractors, Petsinger Farms, Larimore Elevator, and drove semi-truck part time for Brent Trosen.
At the Armistice Dance on November 11, 1955, held in the Larimore City Hall (now the Larimore Museum) Howard met his wife to be, Nola. She spotted an especially talented dancer and got a friend to introduce them. Howard and Nola then danced right into marriage on October 7 th , 1961 and celebrated their 60 th anniversary this past October.
In addition to farming Howard was able to live his passion for music as a self-taught accordion player and played by ear. He played in Howard’s Band and The Woody Snyder Band for many years, entertaining at community dances, weddings, anniversaries, the square dance club and house parties.
Howard really enjoyed spending time with family and friends, whether fishing, a simple BBQ at the farm, on the Ski-doo with the Arvilla Snowcat Club, or enjoying a Hamm’s with friends.
He took his gardening seriously and you would be hard pressed to find a crooked row. From his harvest, he made family favorites of salsa, sauerkraut, and potato pancakes. Howard may not always have had time to stop and smell the roses but he always stopped to smell the lilacs on the way to the shop.
Howard was actively involved in his community. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Larimore, served on the Arvilla Township Board, Bellvue Cemetery Board and the board of the Wally Mutual Insurance Company. He was a member of the Emerado-Arvilla Lions Club, and received the Melvin Jones Award of recognition for service. Howard was an instructor and member of the Arvilla Snowcat Club and a member of the Bachelor’s Grove Saddle Club.
Howard is survived by his loving wife Nola (Roch) Drewlo; children David Drewlo, Sharon (Brad) Johnson, Jean Drewlo (Bob), Joan (Randy) Crowe, Steven (Mandy) Drewlo; and many beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Barbara and Julius, sisters Beverly (Drewlo) Brorby (Eldred), and Lotus (Drewlo) Jensen (Kenneth).
