Joyce Nord

Joyce Marie (Huffman) Nord, 93, of Larimore ND, formerly of Gilby and Devils Lake, passed away on October 30, 2024, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Joyce was born June 6, 1931, in Devils Lake to DeWitt and Hazel (Watson) Huffman.  She graduated from Minnewaukan High School in 1949.  She continued to live in Minnewaukan while being employed at PMA office.

On January 18, 1953, she married Sidney Nord, in Minnewaukan.  They spent their days farming until they moved to Binford, ND in 1956.  She spent her time taking care of their four children.  In 1966, they moved to Gilby, ND.  She was employed as a bookkeeper at Valley Grain Services in Honeyford, ND.  In 1979, they made their home in Devils Lake.  She was employed at Majestic Cleaners as a seamstress for several years.  She later worked as a salesperson at Kelly’s Apparel.

Joyce enjoyed sewing and doing hardanger.  She loved taking care her yard that was filled with beautiful flowers throughout the summer.  Her breads, donuts and lefse were her favorite to make, and were enjoyed by everyone she shared them with.  Her recipe cards were filled with hand-written notes to create the best treats.  She was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church where she was part of many activities within the parish.  She volunteered at Heartland Care facility (now Eventide Heartland Care), fixing hair for the residents.

Survivors include: daughters Pam Oppegard of Gilby, ND; Kathy (Johnny) Clark of Forest River, ND; and Judy (Andrew) Cronquist of Gilby, ND; and son Larry of Gilby, ND; 9 grandchildren: Lori Oppegard (Chris Bartuska), Chad (Liz) Oppegard, Heather Nord (Rich Church), Dane (Amanda) Eastman, Travis (Samantha) Eastman, Tyler Cronquist (Tessie Ronsberg), Grady Eastman (Kaylie Johnson), Nicole Nord and Mandy (Ben) Klein;4 great-granddaughters: Alyssa Machovsky, Emerson Eastman, Peyton Eastman, Lauren Eastman; 3 great-grandsons: Huntley Eastman, Blake Klein, Eli Klein; 1 great-great granddaughter: Rayella Martinson; brothers: Earl and Lyle of Minnewaukan; sister: Ruth Larson of Wahpeton, ND.

She was proceeded in death by her parents; her husband in 1998; sisters Pearl and Doreen; brother Duane; sister-in-laws Gloria, Inger, Alice and Lois; brother-in-laws Don, Marvin, Chet Larson, Victor Nord, Lyder Nord, Garvin Plummer, Harford; cousin Evelyn Sheets who lived with her family from the time she was two years old; son-in-law Robert Oppegard; great-grandsons Granger Eastman and Brantley Eastman; and many nieces and nephews.

Private family services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, November 4 at the Gilby Presbyterian Church with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Prairie Home Cemetery, Gilby.
