Marshall Paul Mattingly II, 67, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away peacefully on October 5th, 2026, at Altru in Grand Forks, ND. He was born on the 28th of March 1959 at the military hospital at Landstuhl, Germany to Frances Doreen and Robert P. Mattingly (both deceased).
Marshall was a lifelong dog rescuer, devoting an immense amount of time to his beloved basset hounds, calling them the best dogs in the world. He would always say you know exactly what you get when you adopt a basset hound, a dog as stubborn as him with a very sweet temperament. He said you’d never have to worry about them being aggressive. Marshall’s most recent beloved bassets Nora and Winston (Winnie) preceded him in death, but he is survived by his newest rescue Minnie, who he saved from a puppy mill and devoted a huge amount of time to her rehabilitation. Marshall and his entire neighborhood came together to create a safe space for Minnie to learn how to trust people again, and we know they’re all sad to see him and Minnie leave.
Marshall was a first generation online gamer. Once he mastered his favorite game, SWTOR, he became a mentor to new players. Marshall’s sharp memory that could name every English monarch in order, allowed him to recall where all the valuable items were, which helped these new players progress quickly. During many years of gaming he found his own group of online friends whose touching stories of Marshall have been a great comfort to his family. His friends knew Marshall would pause his gaming for three reasons, his family, his dogs, and Manchester United football games. We know Marshall was particularly fond of his friend, Yadz. Yadz, we know Mal’s unexpected passing definitely “wasn’t in the brochure”!
Marshall was a lifelong supporter of Manchester United and England football, making sure his family could visit Old Trafford before they moved stateside. Marshall was a black belt in Kuk Sool Won, an accomplished bowler, and loved cooking. He worked for the Federal Civil Service, but what he’d want you to know is that he retired early at 55 so he could do whatever he wanted. Marshall spent his days gaming, hanging out with his dogs, sleeping in, and going out with his family.
Marshall is survived by his children Marshall Paul Mattingly III (Shaina), Chandelle Lee Myers (Jimmy), and Morgan James Mattingly. His three grandchildren, Madisyn (Mazza), Jamie, and Daniel. His siblings: Robert W. Mattingly (Kristen), Janice A. Graham (Ray), and Samantha J. Mattingly.
