Melvin Amundson

March 31, 1919 — January 5, 2018

Melvin L. Amundson, age 98 of Fordville, ND, passed away on Friday, January 5, 2018, at First Care Health Center, Park River, ND.

Melvin was born March 31, 1919, at Edinburg to Norwegian Immigrants Helge and Ingeborg (Haug) Amundson and was the fifth & last surviving in a family of eight. He attended grammar school in Dundee District 35, school #1, Sunday School at Hvideso Lutheran Church and was confirmed at Park Center Lutheran Church. He was drafted into the Army of the United States February 17, 1942, during World War II serving a 24 month tour in the Aleutian Islands and later European Theater in Germany and France honorably discharged November 20, 1945.

He married Esther Seselia Pederson, daughter of Edwin and Emma (Hanson) Pederson September 14, 1944, on a 20-day furlough at the Park River Lutheran Parsonage.

Melvin & Esther began to farm in Perth Township in the spring of 1946, their home for twenty years until they moved to the farm in Medford Township.

Melvin was a member of the Lankin American Legion and the Fordville Lutheran Church.

He is survived by three daughters, Elaine (Lee) Cudmore of Park River, Marlys (Ron) Werner of Port Charlotte, FL, Arlene (Fred) Lyons of Westminster, CO, and son, Bruce (Mary) Amundson of Grand Forks, ND, grandchildren: Robert (Susan) Cudmore, Rhonda (Andy) Undlin, Jeremy (Jennifer) Lyons , Andy Werner, Charles (Nicole) Werner, Katherine (Ian) Graham, Joseph (Angela) Amundson, Michael (Kelsy) Amundson, Thomas Amundson, and Emma, Olivia , Maggie and Mark Matthew Novak, eighteen great-grandchildren: Levi and Sawyer Jane Cudmore, Jacob, Jasmine and Maris Undlin, Vivian & Ian Lyons, Lucy & Hank Werner, Lacey, Lucie, and Elsa Graham, Madelyn, Emmalyn, Avery and Kinley Amundson, Owen & Eric Amundson, and sister-in-law, Beatrice (Merlin) Amundson, former son-in-law Mark A. Novak, Lankin. Several nieces & nephews also survive.

Along with his wife Esther, he is preceded in death by his parents, sons, Myron, Roger, Ellis, and daughter Janet Novak, grandson Benjamin Lyons, sisters, Selma Lindell, Alice Anderson, Evelyn Monsebroten and Helen Liddle, and brothers Henry, Ingvald and Merlin.

FUNERAL SERVICE will be held at the Fordville Lutheran Church, Fordville, ND Friday, January 12 at 11:00

VISITATION one hour prior to the service.

Military rites with Lankin American Legion, and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Team.

INTERMENT will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Fordville, ND.
