Mildred J. Wangen, 94, of Grand Forks, ND and formerly of Petersburg, ND, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2018, at Oakcrest Village, 4000 Valley Square, Grand Forks, ND.
Mildred was born March 22, 1923, at Adams, ND, to William and Thorine (Holumn) Westberg. She was baptized and confirmed at Gustavus Adolphus Church. She attended and graduated from Adams High School, after which she attended Aakers Business College in Grand Forks, ND. She worked for Whalen’s Moving Company after graduation and over the years worked at Larimore High School, Adams High School, and the Minute-Man Missile Site at Adams.
Mildred married Murton Gilderhus in November of 1944 at United Lutheran Church in Grand Forks. They then moved to Larimore, ND where they farmed. In 1960 they moved to her family farm at Adams, ND. Murton passed away in August of 1970. She later married Hans Wangen and they farmed in Petersburg, ND until retirement.
Mildred was a life-long member of Homemakers and continued with the Niagara Homemakers Club until she was 90 years of age. She was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Niagara, ND.
Mildred and Hans traveled world-wide for many years, and in 1979 retired and spent winters at Fountain of the Sun in Mesa, AZ, where they loved golfing, dancing, and playing cards. Mildred also enjoyed volunteering at Jefferson Elementary School in Mesa, AZ. Hans died in June of 1989.
Mildred is survived by daughter Diane (Duane) Bring of Galesburg, ND, son Rodney (Millie) Gilderhus of Petersburg, ND, brother Orrin (Blanche) Westberg, sisters-in-law Melva Westberg, Elsie (Charles) Asche, and Phyllis Sinkler; grandchildren Steven (Jill) Grove, Kirsten Grove, Jenni (Kavan) Lovgren, Megan (Brooks) Vigen, Katy (Scott) Beckman, Dawn (Don) Hawkinson, and Rich Bring; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Murton and Hans, and one brother Kenneth.
Mildred’s last few years of life were spent in the loving care of the staff at Oakcrest Village, Valley 4000, in Grand Forks, ND.
MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Oakcrest Village or St. Andrew Lutheran Church.
FUNERAL SERVICES: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018 at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Niagara, ND.
VISITATION: One hour prior to the service in the church on Saturday.
INTERMENT: Bellevue Cemetery, Larimore, ND
