Neil Magnus

Neil Magnus, age 82, of Fargo, ND, formerly of rural McCanna, ND, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2017 at Sanford on Broadway, Fargo.

Neil Elroy Magnus was born June 8, 1935 at home in Adler Township near Petersburg, ND to Oscar and Katherine (Hanson) Magnus. Neil was baptized and confirmed at Lom Lutheran Church. He attended Petersburg High School.

Neil worked on the railroad and at the Petersburg Elevator prior to meeting his bride Mavis Nash. They were married August 5, 1956 at Elk Valley Lutheran Church and raised four children; Kim, Mark, Bruce and Renae, at McCanna, ND. Neil and Mavis farmed including beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, dogs, and a love of horses. Also, throughout Neil’s long life, he delivered livestock to West Fargo Sale barn for area cattleman, served as a church councilman at Elk Valley Lutheran Church, and on the Niagara Township board. He often would curl on Men’s and Couples teams throughout the years. Neil’s constant faith in the Lord showed his family stability.

Neil is survived by his loving wife, Mavis (Nash) Magnus, of 61 years; Children Kim and Mary Magnus at Gilby, ND; Mark and Joyce Magnus at Northwood, ND; Bruce and Kaye Magnus at Osakis, MN; and Renae and Kevin Mathews at Horace, ND. Grandchildren: Corey Magnus, Callie Magnus, Carly Magnus, Matthew and Laura Magnus, Tracy Magnus, Vanessa and Michael Aggen, Aaron Magnus, Sadie Mathews, Erika Mathews, and Ryan Mathews. Great Grandchildren: Paige Magnus, Blake Magnus, Eliza Aggen, and Davis Aggen. Sister: Shirley Ann Young at Leeds ND. Brother Elton Magnus at Petersburg, ND. In addition to many nieces and nephews.


Neil is preceded in death by Oscar and Katherine Magnus (Father and Mother), Connor Magnus (Grandson), Patty Magnus (Daughter in-law), Allan Young (Brother in-law), Yvonne Magnus (Sister in-law).

FUNERAL SERVICES: 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 4, 2018 at Elk Valley Lutheran Church of rural McCanna, ND.

VISITATION: Wednesday, January 3 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service held in the Bakke Funeral Home of Larimore, ND. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the funeral in the church on Thursday.

INTERMENT: Elk Valley Church Cemetery.
