Robert M. Engh, 93, a resident of Fergus Falls, MN, died Saturday September 2, 2017 at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls. Robert was born April 8, 1924 in Grand Forks, North Dakota to Miller M. and Alma T. (Pedersen) Engh. He attended both the Bachelor’s Grove and the Murphy School through the eighth grade and graduated from Orr High School in 1942.
Robert married Joyce Miller in Minneapolis in 1956, after having been introduced by Robert’s sister Luella. He operated the family farm near Bachelor’s Grove until his retirement in 1992, when they moved to Grand Forks. Joyce passed away in 1998 and Robert remained in Grand Forks until he moved to Fergus Falls in 2012. He resided first at Mill Street Residence and more recently at Pioneer Care Center. Robert especially enjoyed participating in exercise class, musical programs and bible study.
While he was in high school and throughout his early adult years, Robert played the standup bass in several local bands, appearing in many venues from Orr to the Devil’s Lake area. His love of music continued throughout his life.
Robert was an active member of Elk Valley Lutheran Church, rural McCanna, serving in various leadership capacities over the years. He represented his church on the board of directors of the Northwood Deaconess Hospital and Home.
Robert enjoyed exercise and loved to take walks, and was especially proud of being able to ride his bicycle until he was 88 years of age. He had a great interest in current events and he was especially concerned about environmental issues. Robert enjoyed meeting new people and loved a good conversation. He was known for the positive outlook that he possessed throughout his entire life.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, brother Colin, his sister Luella (Clinton) Johnson, and his wife Joyce. He is survived by daughter Jane (Gary) Dunn of Andover, Minnesota, daughter Julie (Stan) Newton of Fergus Falls, Minnesota and granddaughter Emma Newton of Moorhead, Minnesota.
Visitation is set for Thursday, September 21 from 5 – 7 P.M. at Olson Funeral Home of Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Funeral will be held Saturday, September 23 at 2 P.M. at Elk Valley Lutheran Church, rural McCanna, North Dakota. Interment will immediately follow the service at the Elk Valley Cemetery.
